LOCAL ACTIVIST LINKS

Portland's Critical Mass bike ride is a monthly event to advocate for cyclists' rights. Bicyclists take over a few lanes of a major street, and commute en masse to remind drivers of the presence of bicycles and human riders on the streets.

Portland's Independent Media website offers a source of non-corporate-driven news and information. This is particularly important now that 8 major corporations control over 50% of the media (movies, TV, radio, newspapers, internet). This is a fine local source. Note: you can publish stories and upload photos and video to this site.

NW RAGE: (Northwest Resistance Against Genetic Engineering). The group provides public education on the substantial health and environmental concerns associated with genetically engineered, unlabeled foods and other products. NW RAGE's activists visit local stores to speak directly to customers about GE foods (aka "Frankenfoods").

Portland's Cascadia Forest Alliance offers an informative site with updates on legislation, activism, and other important ways to have a say on forest policy and protection. This group has produced some of the toughest, most successful forest activists on the west coast.

I recommend the Portland Jobs With Justice page for information on local labor organizing, MayDay organizing, and great cooperation with other groups to promote economic equity and social justice around town and internationally.

The Savvy Constituent: A Guide to Congress and the White House is a website that offers links on how to quickly contact senators, representatives, or the White House. Did you know that if you send an email to your congressperson, you will receive a letter in response? It makes a difference when we lean on these representatives regarding foreign policy, corporate power, and other issues of deep concern. This site was created by a member of the activist cluster who is a radical librarian.

Local Bookstore Info.

Laughing Horse Books (which doesn't have a website, as far as I know) is a great source for books, newspapers, videos, bulletin boards full of information, and good conversations with like-minded left-leaning activists of all types. Visit them at 3652 SE Division St., Portland, OR. (503)236-2893.
